Taekwon-Do was invented by Grand Master General Choi Hong Hi on March the 11th 1955
What is Taekwon-Do
To put it simply Taekwon-Do is a version of unarmed combat designed for the purposes of self defence. It’s more than that however
It is the scientific use of the body in the method of self defence; a body that has gained the ultimate use of its facilities through intensive physical and mental training
Taekwon-Do is for just about anyone at any age, from four and a half up to 82 years old. Age is not important!
In Taekwon-Do you only compete with your self, your body will set its own limits and you will progress as far as you wish to train
The I.T.F syllabus starts off very relaxed and then works up. A typical warm up will be light yoga like stretches, followed by sit ups and push ups. There are many ways to do these exercises depending on age flexibility and health
“I can’t do that” you say, ok, ever thought about leaning on a wall and then pushing away? That is a push up, any one can do that!
U.K.T.A instructors are under the instruction of the “best ever student of Taekwon-Do, Grand Master Rhee;” quote by General Choi Hong Hi Taekwon-Do Inventor and founder
Elements of Taekwon-Do
Patterns- are a series of fundamental movements - Attack or Defence; against imaginary opponents
Sparring - is an ever changing combat situation whereby the techniques developed in the practice of patterns and fundamental movements are used against a real opponent in a controlled environment
Power - due to the potentially lethal nature of Taekwon-Do techniques, full power cannot be used in sparring. Therefore, targets such as bricks, wood, or plastic boards of a standard breaking consistency are substituted for the live opponent
Special Technique - is used to demonstrate the grace, speed and athletic ability together with the power developed by a correctly trained Taekwon-Do student. Special technique involves such areas as kicking targets of up to 12 feet high, or jumping over obstacles like a car, whilst jumping and kicking a number of targets before landing. The list of techniques is virtually endless - and as varied as human imagination will allow
Sport Taekwon-Do
When Taekwon-Do was first introduced in 1955, it was purely a self defence system being used as unarmed combat for the military. However, as Taekwon-Do developed and reached western society (primarily through the posting of personnel in Korea), the world wide interest developed
With the affluent western society, the competitive aspect evolved. The first World Championships took place at Montreal in 1974. Great Britain are well known world-wide for their technical excellence, and have always had successful teams at all international events. Taekwon-Do is the only sport to have been demonstrated at two Olympic games (Korea 1988 and Spain 1992). Taekwon-Do was excepted as an Olympic sport in 2000
Taekwon-Do in the UK
The 2nd of July 2007, is the 40th anniversary of the entry into Great Britain of a young Korean who was to change the face of British Martial Arts forever. He brought with him from Korea that which very few people in this country had ever heard of. That name is now as well known in Britain as Karate. The name of the Martial Art was Taekwon-Do, and the name of that young Korean is Grand Master Rhee Ki Ha, 9th Degree O.C.M O.L.M
